I’m currently studying Conservation Biology at Columbia University in New York - a fertile city for artists, a place with endless possibilities and where I am getting in contact with a universe of photographers and their lenses.
As a kid, my curiosity for the unknown, for the green and for the animals, led me to readings and to outdoor activities. While studying Biology in Ribeirão Preto, I became a dive master and though diving for almost four years. This job kept me traveling and discovering the Brazilian Coast during my university years.
In 1995, I moved to Pantanal, State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Supposed to work there for three months, I ended up living and working there for four extraordinary years. And as I got fully involved with Ecotourism, Nature Photography ended up flourishing in my life.
In 1999, along with two of my best friends, I rode almost 5000 kilometers of the Brazilian Coast, in the project “Pantanal goes to the Beach”. We left the city of Vitória and reached São Luís do Maranhão, publicizing Pantanal’s culture and the beauties to the Brazilians who live by the coast. We promoted lectures, workshops and photo exhibitions in universities, resorts, bed and breakfasts and hotels. Throughout these six months of pure adventure, we were exposed to tremendous new cultures and landscapes - and produced a large image bank of the Brazilian Coast. That’s when I officially started my career in photography.
After the trip, I work as a Biologist and Ecotourism manager in Bonito, a city in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. That’s when I was invited by one of the greatest Brazilian nature photographers and video maker to work for a whole year with new techniques in nature photography, television productions and specialized documentaries. Back to Pantanal in 2002, I worked as a consultant for the region’s potentialities in Ecotourism, its connections to the sustainable development as well as maintenance of Biodiversity.
The daily life of the activities in environmental areas, in addition to my sensibility and background as a biologist are the lines of my photography. And I feel honored to show it to you. I hope that from each image, from each detail, from each feeling that nature brings us, we can feel that we are part of something bigger and really dense. Something that needs to be respected, understood and preserved. Our future relies on that.. New York City, April 2004.
